5 Spontaneous Things to Do With Friends This Spring Break

By Kailey Walters on February 26, 2018

With spring break on the horizon, a lot of us are hoping for the next couple of weeks to speed up so that long-awaited, coveted week can be here already. Some of us might have big plans — perhaps to travel to distant lands and have the times of our lives with friends and family. Others of us might have plans to get some much-needed R&R on the living room couch or in our very own beds at home. Either way sounds absolutely wonderful, as long as we’re enjoying ourselves and taking a well-deserved break from school.

However, if you happen to find yourself with not much to do but are still hoping something exciting might come your way, don’t fret. There are plenty of things you can do to entertain yourself, without having to plan extensively beforehand. Especially if you’re with your friends, the possibilities are endless.

If you want to have a good time this spring break, but don’t necessarily want to spend it hanging out at the same hometown movie theater/diner/mall that you’ve been frequenting for the past [insert number of years], check out some of the following suggestions for spontaneous things to do with friends.

1. Try something new.

You don’t necessarily have to be in a new, exotic place to try something different. Sure, depending on the size of your hometown it might be a little difficult to find someplace completely new — but there has to be something in the nearby vicinity that you’ve never done before. Maybe you could try a new food that you’ve been wanting to try for a while … or it could even be something you’ve never wanted to try, but hey in the moment, anything’s possible! Especially if you live near/in a big city (e.g. New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, etc.), all the different kinds of food you could try are endless.

Spend some time exploring your city without consulting Yelp or other websites. While walking around, you’re sure to stumble upon an eatery that you’ve never been to before (especially considering how huge cities can be). Check it out and sample some of the food there. It just might surprise you and could end up being one of your new favorite places.

The same thing goes for other entertainment places — shopping centers, stores, etc. Simply from exploring the city or even your own hometown, you’re sure to find at least a few little places you’ve never visited before. Even if they’re not exactly your style, going in and having a look around won’t hurt.

2. Do a photo shoot.

Even if you’re not particularly into artsy photography type stuff, taking photos could end up being more fun than you think. A great thing about this is that it doesn’t cost much money or effort. Grab your camera (could be a fancy one or even just your phone) and spend some time with friends driving or walking around your neighborhood. You could take pictures of each other or the surrounding scenery such as houses, streets, flowers, the sunset — whenever you feel inspiration strike. Not only is it a simple, fun way to spend some time with your best buds, but it’s also a great way to make memories and keep them in picture form.

3. Make a physical change.

Get a piercing. Dye your hair. Get a tattoo. There are a bunch of different things you can do to spice up your appearance, some of them being pretty drastic. If you’ve been looking for a change lately, maybe one of these things would be good for you. Of course, there may be people in your life (aka friends, parents, other relatives) who will warn you against doing something so drastically different to your body — so just keep in mind that in some cases, it may be a wise move to listen to them.

Otherwise, if you’ve got the green light, don’t be shy about doing something different with your appearance. Sometimes people find that making a physical change can help them feel more confident. Plus, doing it with a friend or a group of friends can help you feel more secure and can be a great bonding moment for everyone. Embrace the opportunity to do something new.

And even if you’re not so sure about doing something crazy or out of the ordinary, like dying your hair purple, you can still find ways to make a change in a more toned down way, perhaps by getting a haircut or even trying out a new hairstyle for a day. Do whatever makes you feel good!

4. Take a day trip.

If you have the time and resources, taking a spontaneous day trip could be a great way to have some fun with your friends when there’s nothing else to do. Wherever you go doesn’t have to be super far away either. Look up some places that are perhaps within a couple hours away and hit the road. Whether you head to the beach, a hiking trail, a museum, or anywhere else, it’s sure to be exciting in its own right.

Plus, the mini road trip itself will be a good time as long as you’re with your friends. Take the opportunity to talk, laugh, listen to the radio, sing along to throwback songs that you forgot even existed … and just have a good time.

5. Pull an all-nighter.

Okay, maybe this one isn’t exactly the best for your health, but it’s worth it sometimes. And honestly, what’s more spontaneous than staying up all night with a group of your closest friends? Some of the best memories are made during late-night, deep conversations with your friends, and even though you all might be sleep deprived come morning, you wouldn’t trade that strengthened bond of closeness for anything else.

Sometimes the best memories are made in the moment. Smile and embrace them this spring break!
